Philippine Youth Congress for Information Technology or Y4IT is an annual event here in the Philippines wherein students, educators, professionals and technology enthusiast gather to witness and listen to well-known speakers in the Information Technology field. It is organized by the University of the Philippines System Information Technology Foundation together with the Institution’s Information Technology Development Center. In this gathering of minds, people will discuss and share their ideas as well as innovations. Included in the list of featured speakers for this year’s Y4iT are international practitioners Wendy Gorton of Google, Danny Castonguay of Kalibrr, Johan Janssens of Timble, Markku Kero of Job and Esther Technologies, Christy Book-Tsang of Linux Professional Institute (Asia Pacific), and Bebo White of SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory (a US national laboratory based in Stanford University). Participants will be able to engage in lively discussions with them regarding the current happenings in the international Information Technology scene.
Luckily, we will be attending this conference because we are required to attend one national seminar according to our chosen field trip model. This will be a huge privilege to us Information Technology students of University of Southeastern Philippines to be able to attend this seminar. Y4IT on its 11th year will be a three day seminar and will be held at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City, this September 17-19, 2013. This year’s theme is “Imagine. Innovate. Inspire.” This seminar would encourage not just students who are still finding their way to the Information Technology field but also to the professionals that are already in the industry yet are still willing to learn and acquire new ideas. There will be speakers from different companies and sectors who are to give their ideas and innovations to feed the hungry minds of the audiences.
Prof. Remmel Feria, Project Manager for Y4iT mentioned that this congress ensures that Filipino students get to see a survey of the exciting developments and breakthroughs in the field of Information Technology and put them into context, so that they won’t be left behind in this growing field. Interesting, right? I am excited to hear what the speakers would share. I expect get a lot of information about the current trend in the Information Technology field. To know what is new and what is in demand.
In order to be known in the IT field, it is important that you have a unique work apart from the others because the population of IT graduates are increasing so as well as the number of your competitors. For me, you must have your own signature of work, your brand, your style apart from anybody else for you to stand out. Just like the vision of Apple Inc.,”We're gambling on our vision, and we would rather do that than make "me too" products.”, make ideas that are worthy for you to be proud of. But doing this it is not necessary if you are as wise as Bill Gates. I will never forget this quote he quoted from Picasso that says, “Good artist copy, great artists steal.” It is between the good and the bad. It is how you play the game. This career is the battlefield of great minds.
As I was thinking of what more to say, I remember the upcoming event we are about to join this September. The Ideaspace: Technopreneurship Bootcamp that will be held in our school. It’s kind of sayang that the Ideaspace Bootcamp event would take place three days before this seminar. This seminar might actually help and enlighten our minds of new ideas but it is not worth the drama to be able the privilege to attend this seminar and learning new innovations is like acquiring a key to unlock to the next level.
“I believe in innovation and that the way you get innovation is you fund research and you learn the basic facts.” These are the words of the great Bill Gates, one of the richest technopreneur in the world. The events that would give you knowledge and new ideas would give you a great chance of giving birth to an innovation. Innovation is a new invention. And all innovations start from an idea. I expect this seminar would make the participants imagine of what the future awaits them, help them innovate new ideas through their lectures and shared experiences and lastly, would inspire young minds to pursue this career and would encourage them to aim for success. Success is not that easy to get. One must be patient enough to accept disapproval and enthusiastic enough of thinking new ideas that would probably click in the market. Technology nowadays is emerging so fast na kapag bumili ka ng latest na gadget ngayon, bukas ay laos na ito dahil may bago na namang nairelease. An innovator must be updated, wise and fast in thinking of new idea that would actually make our lives easier.
Technology is the current world. It greatly affects people’s daily lives. It has changed the generation of teenagers and adults so fast. Technology is taking over our world but we must not be taken over by it. Technology is made to make our lives easier not to make us lazier. Filipino children nowadays don’t know how to play piko or tumbang preso instead they are playing video games and the likes. It is quite disheartening to know that our culture is forgotten as time goes by. Let us use technology wisely and most importantly, correctly.
I hope this seminar would meet my expectations. I am really looking forward on hearing bright ideas that might actually help me in building my dreams or that might actually encourage me to fall back, I am not so sure. I am still a novice in this field and I still don’t know what experiences it might showcase to me whether it’s good or bad, I don’t care. I am open to possibilities and impossibilities. I want to progress in this field and acquire success someday. I hope this seminar will be a successful one.
